140920 “My Spring Day” – First Impressions

“My Spring Day” premiered on MBC last week and I was very surprised by its setting. Initially, I found the couple’s pairing a bit odd due to the considerable age gap. However, thinking about it, a rookie actress could find more experience if she plays and learns alongside an experienced actor.

The story uses an interesting concept of cellular memory which is a medical hypothesis implying the recipients’ personalities are inherited from their donors. Will this show be able to make its way into the top ranking charts? Let’s find out.

About the cast

Lee Bom Yi (Sooyoung) is a clinical dietitian working in Hae Gil hospital and is dedicated to living her life to the fullest. She is very down-to-earth and her morals are well-placed. However, Bom Yi tends to speak up impulsively and is quick judging people. She’s also the daughter of the hospital’s chairwoman and is getting herself in trouble regularly. I’m glad she isn’t perfect, which leaves her some room for character development.

Kang Dong Ha (Kam Woo Sung) is a lonesome countryside widower struggling to raise his two kids. He’s emotionally scarred because of his wife’s passing, and right off the bat, viewers can see his heart wavering at the presence of Bom Yi, who reminds him so much of his long lost love. I really like that his character stays outside of typical heroic standards. The writer displays him as a working classahjussi who is openly defiant towards people he doesn’t like.

Kang Dong Wook (Lee Jun Hyuk), is a famed thoracic surgeon exuding raw talent and perfectionism. He is also Dong Ha’s younger brother, and expresses interest in Bom Yi. Before meeting her, he had an unrequited love for Dong Ha’s wife, who ultimately passed away. Her heart was transplanted into Bom Yi, giving her a new life. Now, Dong Wook’s outlook is that he cannot lose another woman in his life.

Bae Ji Won (Jang Shin Young) is one of the most prominent managers of Hae Gil hospital. Combined with stylish looks and expertise, she is described to be a cold and calculative woman. After being acquainted with Dong Ha, she is set on a track to fall in love with him.

Overview

As for my impressions, I thought the drama would start off with heavy melodramatic elements. On the contrary, the sadness that emerged from the premiere was covered with subtle humor, charm, and tenderness. In fact, I kept smiling during the whole run because I was moved by the classical formula the show is undertaking – a relatable, personal drama, with characters building relations based on moral values. This reminded me somewhat of the 2004 drama “I’m Sorry, I Love You” and the 2011 “Scent of a Woman,” dramas that got me into the melodrama genre for the first time. However, “My Spring Day” is brighter and lighter in comparison.

Per example, “My Spring Day” started off with people receiving different life blessings, such as a young son helping his blind mother cross the street, another mother pleading to a doctor to save her son, and finally, our heroine receiving a heart transplant. A quick note: please brace yourselves as initially, the drama may be a bit alarming with the excessive flesh and blood during the medical operation. Of course, the series will surely deliver scenes revealing darker secrets and painful memories later on.

admit this is a very cute moment for our pairing couple.

The Humor

I find it interesting when the main couple cross paths with each other, constantly bickering with each other. Bom Yi wanted to buy beef so she could prepare beef soup for one of her patients. But, a misunderstanding occurred during her purchase with Dong Ha at the opening store, and since that incident, the dietitian keeps meeting the man almost everywhere, resulting in hilarious antagonistic interactions. Dong Ha meets Bom Yi during the anniversary of his wife’s death, when he was pouring alcohol at the sea for her traditional memorial. Bom Yi stops him, not recognizing him and thinking he is a supervillain destroying the sacred way. Aside, the drama has its occasional heartbreaking moments, revealing glimpses of the painful past.

The humor in this show brings a very nice transition out of some of the more serious scenes. I think this aspect balances out the setting very well and the melodrama as described is not as heavy as I was expecting. The gags and playfulness from this drama are few, subtle, and certainly unpredictable. The funny dialogue is not forcefully put into the script, and actually contributes to the character development and narrative. Per example, Bom Yi was forced to renew a contract by her hospital manager with Dong Ha after she rejected his deal about an earlier settlement they end up having a hilariously confusing conversation.

“Reje-ception”…? Bom Yi got lost in her own conversation. So did I.

The Acting

A big question remains for acting performance. An idol has taken on the leading role for this drama. Does Sooyoung improve in this show? Does she share chemistry with her co-lead Kam Woo Sung? Certainly. She has chosen a role in which her character is quite similar to her real personality and this really enhances her acting abilities. Sooyoung also makes me forget that she is a Girls’ Generation member, an important thing for idols who venture into acting.

Additionally, she actually shares a good aura with Kam Woo Sung. Eye contact, for one, is a major factor in the chemistry between actors, and the longing evident in the eye contact between the two main leads is what really convinces me about the pairing. The only problem I found in this show is Lee Bom Yi’s relationship with Kang Dong Wook. The premiere showed them discussing their relationship and wedding at some point. The fact they are dating left me daunted and awkward because I barely see them together and their interactions reminded me more of a brother-sister relationship instead of a romantic one. Followers could tell me they aren’t the endgame pairing, but I wish their connection was at least believable.

Final thoughts

It’s really nice starting a drama that brings something new on set, and I think “My Spring Day” is a refreshing addition to the list for melodrama followers here. However, it is hard to tell if the series is worth watching yet. So far, the show seems promising and it is filled with solid character development, an attractive setting, and a balanced narrative. The humor carries a good tone and brings balance to the story after some serious dialogue exchanges. The background concept of cellular memory, which is intriguing and unique, brings something new to the table with its unproved medical hypothesis. I’m not entirely convinced the drama will keep my attention for the whole run. However, I have a very good feeling “My Spring Day” will leave me entertained for some time.

Are you watching this show? Please let me know about your thoughts below!

For drama fans in the United States & Canada , don’t miss “My Spring Day” on Soompi’s sister site, KDrama.

140924 TaeTiSeo share unfortunate happenings behind “Holler” MV filming

We might adore and hail the girls for their glamorous music video for their comeback song “Holler” but there are more stories behind that are not glamorous as it can be.

On the September 23rd episode of OnStyle”s “The TaeTiSeo” the trio features the behind-the-scenes of their filming for “Holler”.

However, some struggles and hardships occurred during the process. To sum it up, Seohyun lost her balance during the scene with the glass stage and the broadcast showed the worried Taeyeon and Tiffany.

In addition to that, because of their concept”s demanding use of heels, Taeyeon almost broke her toe nails and expressed how many times she has suffered the same pain. Lastly, Tiffany who appeared to be very on hand throughout the filming has showed her love and dedication by personally taking the responsibility of coordinating their outfits and accessories.

When the girls have struggled like this, all we could do is support their comeback and cheer on them.

140924 That Which We Call A Rose: TaeTiSeo’s “Holler”

That Which We Call A Rose: TaeTiSeo’s “Holler” Written by Lo On September 24, 2014

Girl’s Generation has faced issues with their subgroup since the idea for TTSwas first conceived. Some Sones disagreed with the members selected, some believed that Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun were the only talented vocalists and the others were useless, others said that supporting TTS was a betrayal. The reaction to the news that TTS is getting a comeback following the accusations that “Mr.Mr” was “TTS and their backup dancers” did not go over well. Clearly, the trio needed a solid comeback. And on that count, Holler gets a pass. But perhaps an addendum was needed: a solid comeback with mostly original music. Because on that scale? Big fat “F”.

“Holler” is a really lackluster track. “Twinkle” was a song with personality and and spark and sparkle and oopmh. Not so much here. It’s really generic sounding, with the whole thing feeling more like album filler than a title track. Which makes sense, considering it’s a remake of Mizrock‘s B-side “Hello”. What is shocking is how much like “Hello” “Holler” sounds. Keeping the melody the same is a given, but most of the vocals are identical too. There’s no showboating, no belting, no high or held notes. TTS is supposed to be a vocals-oriented unit, and “Holler” just doesn’t back that concept.

“Adrenaline” is a fun bouncy song that’s really hard to start dancing too. TTS sound a lot more awake here than on “Holler”, which backs my perception of good pop as a viable caffeine replacement. “Adrenaline” is very stylized, with obvious autotune– albeit for effect rather than pitch correction–, and an upbeat frothy sugar-pop sound. It’s much more in line with the europop of five or six years ago, which fits, because it’s a remake of “Adrenaline” by the Velvet Angels. “Adrenaline”, as fun as it is, sounds childish and has a disconnect between the chorus and verses. However, they also harmonize fabulously, and play with picking up and dropping out of lines for a whirlwind effect. It’s definitely one of Holler‘s gems.

Third on the EP is “Whisper” which is actually an original song. And that is the only completely positive thing I have to say about it. As a whole, “Whisper” reminds of a really good background song, or high-quality hold music. It’s not lacking in quality, it’s just not a song ready for the big leagues. The lyrics are generic, the vocals are generic, the melody is generic. Nothing is bad, it’s just really, really meh.

“Stay” is the final original song on Holler, and is in the same vein as “Adrenaline”. It’s charming, upbeat silly love song. This is what goes through your mind when you’re in love. Let the day last forever, may this happy time never end. And praise Jesus, “Stay” showboats. Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun reach for notes, travel up and down scales, and belt some lovely adlibs. This is why TTS exists. Sadly, Tiffany’s rapping makes an appearance here. SM, do not let any member of Girls’ Generation rap. They cannot do it, and every time they do, it takes a year off the life of whoever hears it.

“Only U” is clearly meant to be the “Baby Steps” of Holler. Like “Baby Steps” it’s a pretty, delicate piano number paired with powerful, soulful yet quiet singing. Also like “Baby Steps”, it’s a remake. The original is called “Breathe You Out” byCharice, who is tragically best known as Glee‘s Sunshine Corazon. And like “Baby Steps”, “Only U” spanks the original. Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun sound hopeless in love, terrified of getting hurt, but unable and unwilling to stop their fall. It’s simply breathtaking, and by far the best song Holler has on offer.

Unfortunately, the last track on Holler is the worst. “EYES” is a blatant rip-off ofAriana Grande‘s “Problem”, and do not even try to say otherwise. The opening riff is a synth variation on the famous horn section; the sudden whisper before the chorus, the one-line chorus, the riff-drop, are all from “Problem”, aka The Biggest Goddamn Hit of 2014. It is not possible to do that without intending too. Really, it’s not even that it’s a rip-off that really pisses me off– it’s that “EYES” is a knockoff. Everything about it is a lower-quality imitation of a really good song. The only improvement is that TTS can actually enunciate, but that is not enough to make up for horn removal. Don’t take the horns out of pop music. MORE horns, not less.

It’s not that I hold to the idea that remakes or covers are bad. Honestly, I really like good covers. I prefer the Glee covers of “Teenage Dream” to the original, and I hate Glee with the fire of a thousand suns. It’s that there should be limits on how much a company relies on them, and they should be limited to covers or remakes that the artists sound good covering. TTS is, as a whole, not great with covers. When they sing “Holler”, “EYES” or “Adrenaline”, they’re on par with the originals. But a good cover should make it impossible to believe that they are not the originators, and while they can with some of their songs, they can’t with all. And that’s a bit of a problem. “Baby Steps” got a pass because it’s amazing. Most of Holler cannot say the same.

Holler is an EP defined not by its’ songs, but what its’ songs are. Two-thirds of this mini are remakes or ripoffs, and even though those songs are mostly good, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. SM is so shameless and unapologetic about it, it’s infuriating. The original songs–even “Adrenaline”, who’s originators are ungoogleable but probably Swedish– were found in about 12 hours. As someone who really liked Twinkle, it’s kind of offensive to get handed something that’s mostly other peoples’ work and be told “Yeah, we bought or stole most of this. Suck it.” But that doesn’t stop Holler from being a solid EP with good replay value and quality pop. SM might not make good music, but, clearly they can buy it.

140916 Director of “Roommate 2″: “New Members Are Completely Unpredictable”

With the premiere of “Roommate 2” only a few days away, Park Sang HyukPD has revealed what the viewers can expect to see in the much-awaited first episode.

The new cast entered the shared house on September 13, and have since been adjusting to their life as a part of the vibrant community. With the original membersLee Dong Wook, Jo Se Ho, Seo Kang Joon, Park Min Woo, and After School‘s Nana joined by g.o.d‘s Park Joon Hyung, Girls’ Generation‘s Sunny,Otani Ryohei, Kara‘s Heo Youngji, Bae Jong Ok, Lee Gook Joo, andGOT7‘s Jackson, the anticipation is only growing for the fresh second season.

The PD revealed during an interview with news outlet OSEN, “We are focusing all of our energy into keeping an eye on these people. Unlike with the previous members, we have faced a large number of unexpected situations. For instance, one member started craving potato stew at 5 a.m. and simply left the house,” and laughed, “We have a hard time running after everyone.”

“I am not exaggerating when I say that Park Jun Hyung and Lee Gook Joo are hilarious around the clock. Simply watching them do ordinary daily chores, such as eating and sleeping, is entertaining. They snore loudly, eat a lot, and even dance at random times. Fun moments keep taking place. Even for me as the producer, it is surprising,” the PD explained, and added that Bae Jong Ok is expected to catch the viewers’ eye with her youthful and sweet charms, whereas Jackson is a natural entertainer.

“Due to such factors, the original members were completely dumbfounded at first. Compared to season one, there are certainly more impulsive members, and unexpected events take place as a result. It feels like aliens have entered a peaceful house. Something new constantly happens. Both old and new members are now trying to adjust to the atmosphere,” the PD concluded, raising the expectations for the new season.

The second season of “Roommate” will premiere on September 21.

I thought to myself, “Ah, this was how I felt at that time,” and received a lot of consolation as I cried.” Upon recalling this, Tiffany began to tear up once again and became flustered when she realized that she was crying on camera.

Tiffany certainly takes pride and care in her singing career, from the moment of her heartfelt audition to her successful K-Pop idol days even now. On the same episode, Tiffany revealed her jam-packed, tight schedule, saying to the camera, “If you look here (gesturing to the schedule), we have breaks, but we don”t actually rest.
