130601 Fact about SNSD 155 to 170

Written By Regina Kim on Saturday, June 1, 2013 | 3:11 PM

You may ask… What is the significance behind this range of numbers? Well, those who have been SNSD obsessed SONEs long enough may have already guessed what this post is about. For those who have not, heres a little hint.

If that wasn’t already blindingly obvious, 155 to 170 is the difference in height between SNSD’s tallest and shortest members. (While Sunny’s profile officially says 157cm, this video Sunny herself seem to think otherwise.)

This post is to ‘celebrate’ anothertrivial aspect of our beloved SNSD that sets them apart from the rest. The massive difference in their heights.

People often question how it is possible that 9 very different individuals could possibly work together to form the wonder that is SNSD. If you have been following this blog for awhile, you may have already read dreadtech’s ‘amajjing’ analysis on this issue here, here, here and here. BUT! I lack the capability to go into the ‘deep and meaningful’. On the other hand, I specialize in the ‘shallow and trivial‘ and prefer to address an issue such as the following. ^_^ LOL

According to snsdkorean’s ‘Soshictionary‘, the term ‘Danshin‘ is used in reference to

The vertically challenged; namely Lee Soonkyu, Kim Taeyeon, Kim Hyoyeon, Jessica Jung and sometimes Tiffany Hwang. People who are labeled “short” just because “others are abnormally taller”.

While the term ‘Jangshin‘ describes

Vertically gifted people born with long, slender legs; namely Kwon Yuri, Choi Sooyoung, Im Yoona, and Seo Joohyun. Responsible for bringing up the average height of SNSD.

When forming idol groups, it is usually favoured to group together people of similar heights. I did a little bit of research and here are a couple of examples:

KARA – Shortest: Seungyeon (160cm) Tallest: Jiyoung (~166cm) Difference: 6cm 4minute – Shortest: Sohyun (162cm) Tallest: Jihyun (167cm) Difference: 5cm After School – Shortest: Raina (166cm) Tallest: UEE (173cm) Difference: 7cm f(x) – Shortest: Luna (162cm) Tallest: Sulli (169cm) Difference: 7cm

This is so that dance performances look more synchronised, group photos look more uniform, and also to prevent things like this from happening.

Whereas for SNSD… =.=

Shortest: Sunny (155cm) Tallest: Sooyoung (170cm) Difference: 15cm

HOWEVER! This large discrepancy in height would only be an issue if it were to actually affect the quality of performances, which in SNSD’s case, it does not. When SNSD ventured into Japan, they were constantly praised for their synchronised dances and long slender legs. One would NEVER expect half of them to actually be classified as ‘danshins’. (In a Japanese program, an ‘expert’ even stated that he believed that SNSD members were all taller than 170cm xD)Personally, watching SNSD on TV programmes etc.. my mind was BLOWN when i realised that i’m Yoona’s height… “but they look so tall!” D:

You may ask… how is this all possible? Well…

Its Soshi… anything is possible *obnoxious laugh* Insoles/ Blocks Blessed body proportions xD Endless hours of hard work and practice.

In my opinion, this little quirk is just another reason for me to love Soshi more. SNSD is quite probably the only idol group that can clearly be split into a ‘danshin team’ and ‘jangshin team’.

Also, without the massive height differences, hilarious macros/pictures like these would never exist!

Conclusion? Us SONEs love SNSD just the way they are… ‘danshins’ and ‘jangshins’ alike.

BTW (This post was really just an excuse to share the hilarious pics/clips/macros)

*For more golden SNSD danshin-jangshin moments, be sure to watch SNSD’s Intimate note and Horror Movie Factory. AND… like most Soshi variety shows….be prepared to laugh your arse off.
