There’s kind of an excitement amongst English speaking K-pop fans when their favorite idol releases a cover or performs an English song. It’s this feeling of closeness we feel to them that they know the same songs we do and they can sing it like we do. Does that make sense or am I just alone on this? K-pop idols love American music like the rest of the world and absolutely love doing covers of their favorite pop singles. Most of them who take on the challenge, do it well and here are some of my personal favorites.
Before I clicked on SNSD Tiffany’s cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” I was scared. Adele’s single is a classic and Adele is vocal goddess and no one can do Adele like Adele can. Did Tiffany do a decent job? Yes. Was I impressed? Yes. Not bad Tiffany, not too shabby, but it can’t compare to Adele or Park Ji Min’s near perfect audition on “Superstar K.”
JYJ’s Junsu and Hallyustar BoA got together to sing the theme song to Disney’s “Aladdin.” Listen to them cover “A Whole New World” together and while we’re at it and since Korean stars love doing covers of this song, let’s take a listen to Ivy and Brian’s version together!
Anytime I get to hear Taeyang sit down on a piano and do a cover of a popular American song, a part of me cries for him to be in my arms. Listen to our Taeyang’s cover Frankie J’s “Don’t Wanna Try.”
SHINee’s cover of Ke$ha’s “Tic Toc,” is the most flamboyant and most adorable Ke$ha cover ever. There is nobody who can do this better, nobody.
Jay Park, when he was 2PM’s leader, covered Ne-yo’s “So sick” on a variety show to show some girls what he could do. The girls didn’t care but HOTTEST loved his cover:
Beyonce’s “Halo” is one of the toughest songs to cover and sing, but solo star Ailee and 2NE1′s Minzy do it with ease.
2NE1′s Bom’s “We Ride” by Rihanna cover is insanely good and the group’s cover of RiRi’s “Take a Bow,” is awesome. Minzy and CLs’ vocals are overrated and need more lead vocal parts!
